Nguồn gốc của Tháng Củ Mật
Tháng Củ Mật là tháng Chạp (tháng 12 âm lịch). Nói cách khác, đây là tháng trước tháng Tết. Người xưa gọi tháng Chạp là "tháng củ mật" bởi tháng ấy nhiều trộm đạo. Theo tiếng Hán Việt, củ còn có nghĩa là đôn đốc, kiểm tra, kiểm soát mọi việc xung quanh. Còn mật thì dễ suy đoán hơn. Từ này nghĩa là giữ kín, không để lộ cho ai biết. Ví dụ như mật lệnh, mật thám, bảo mật. Kết hợp cả hai từ, ta có củ mật: giữ gìn, quản lý mọi thứ một cách cẩn thận và cẩn mật. Trước đây, đến tháng Chạp này, các quan phủ thường hay nhắc nhở những người dân cần cẩn mật, các tuần đinh phải tăng cường kiểm soát cẩn mật để phòng ngừa trộm cắp.
Origin of the "Củ Mật" Month
"Tháng Củ Mật" also known as “Tháng Chạp” (the 12th month in the lunar calendar), is essentially the month before Tết Nguyên Đán (Lunar New Year). In the past, people referred to this month as the "Củ Mật" month due to the prevalence of theft during this time. In Sino-Vietnamese, "củ" means to control, and manage everything around. As for "mật," it is more straightforward, meaning to keep something secret, confidential, or hidden, such as secret, or security. Combining the two words, "củ mật" implies careful and secretive management of everything. In the past, during “Tháng Chạp”, officials would often remind the people to be cautious, and security measures were heightened to prevent theft.
Tháng Củ Mật cho đến nay
Cho đến nay, quan niệm này vẫn còn, người Việt quan niệm rằng đây là một trong những tháng dễ xảy ra trộm cắp nhất năm. Mọi người đều bận rộn với công việc, chuẩn bị mua sắm Tết hoặc tham gia vào các bữa tiệc tất niên, vì thế nhiều người thường không cẩn thận, lơ là việc giữ gìn tài sản vật chất, tạo điều kiện để kẻ gian trộm cắp. Tháng cuối năm này cũng là tháng thu hoạch, ai buôn bán cũng thu tiền về, ai có tiền cho vay cũng đòi về, và để sắm sửa đón Tết. Trong khi đó, trộm cắp cũng tăng cường hoạt động để kiếm tiền tiêu. Hơn nữa, đây cũng là thời điểm tích trữ, hoặc người dân cũng mang theo nhiều tiền khi ra ngoài. Lúc này, mọi người sẽ luôn nhắc nhau về “tháng củ mật” để tránh mất tài sản, tiền bạc.
Ngoài ra, tháng "củ mật" cũng còn có nghĩa là cẩn thận với lửa. Thời điểm cuối năm, ai cũng quan trọng việc củi lửa trong nhà, từ lửa nhang khói, vàng mã, cho đến lửa để nấu nướng. Chính vì thế, mọi người luôn phải cẩn thận khi sử dụng lửa để phòng tránh hỏa hoạn.
Hiện nay, tháng củ mật còn một ý nghĩa khác với người hiện đại đó chính là phải để ý đến việc đi lại và chú ý giữ gìn sức khỏe. Bởi cuối năm tần suất tiệc tùng tất niên liên tục sẽ khiến chúng ta kém tỉnh táo và sức khỏe sẽ có phần giảm sút. Vì thế để tránh xảy ra những tai nạn đáng tiếc trước dịp Tết Nguyên Đán, người Việt sẽ nhắc nhau cẩn thận vào tháng cuối năm.
Mặc dù chủ yếu nói đến việc trông coi nhà cửa cẩn thận, đề phòng trộm cắp, củ mật có thể nói chung những việc cần kiêng kỵ ngày cận Tết (và cả trong Tết) để tránh gặp xui xẻo. Ví dụ như: không gây gổ, xung đột, hạn chế cho vay mượn tiền, tránh làm vỡ bát đĩa
Vậy đó là ý nghĩa của tháng cuối năm (âm lịch), tất cả cũng là để chúng ta nhắc nhở nhau cẩn thận một chút để có thể đón một Năm Mới an toàn trọn vẹn nhất.

People tend to be less careful about protecting their belongings because they are too busy working, attending year-end celebrations, or getting ready for Tết, which can present possibilities for burglars. The end of the year is also a time when a lot of financial transactions happen, such as people repaying loans and businesses collecting debts, which might increase the possibility of theft. Moreover, people typically carry more cash during this time of year, which raises the possibility of theft even more. As a result, theft is prevalent everywhere during the remainder of the Củ Mật month.
During the month of "Tháng Củ Mật" in Vietnamese culture, people are reminded to be careful with fire. This is especially important at the end of the year when family chores such as burning incense for ancestors and cooking with fire are common. The name of the month serves as a reminder to always exercise caution when using fire to prevent accidental fires.
Today, the "Củ Mật" month also carries another modern meaning, urging people to pay attention to the traffic and take care of their health. The frequent year-end parties can cause a drop in health and diminished attention. Therefore, to avoid accidents before the Lunar New Year, Vietnamese people remind each other to be careful during the last month of the year.
Although primarily referring to being cautious about securing homes and preventing theft, " Tháng Củ Mật" also encompasses general precautions to avoid mishaps in the days leading up to Tet (and during Tet), such as avoiding conflicts, limiting borrowing or lending money, and preventing breakages.
